Ask a Lawyer (Legal Q&A)
Get written answers to your legal questions from licensed attorneys — no appointment needed.
What is Legal Q&A?
Legal Q&A is a subscription service that lets you submit written legal questions and receive detailed, written answers from licensed attorneys. Unlike a full consultation, Q&A is asynchronous — you submit your question, and an attorney responds within 24–48 hours depending on your plan.
It is ideal for understanding your rights, getting plain-language explanations of legal concepts, or deciding whether your situation needs a full attorney engagement.
Important: Legal Q&A responses provide general legal information. They do not constitute legal advice and do not create an attorney-client relationship. For complex or high-stakes matters, use Find a Lawyer to engage an attorney directly.

How to ask a question
- 1Click Ask a question at the top of the Ask a Lawyer page.
- 2Select the practice area that best matches your question (e.g. Employment, Immigration, Family Law).
- 3Write your question in as much detail as possible — include relevant facts, dates, state/jurisdiction, and what you are trying to understand or achieve.
- 4Submit. One question is deducted from your monthly allowance immediately.
- 5An attorney will review and respond within the timeframe for your plan (24 hours for Standard/Unlimited, 48 hours for Starter).
- 6You will receive an email notification when your answer is ready. Open the question thread to read the response and submit any follow-up clarification (included at no extra cost).
Common question topics
Questions outside these areas are also accepted — attorneys will let you know if your question falls outside the scope of the service.
Viewing past questions
All your submitted questions and attorney responses are saved in your portal. To view them:
- 1Go to Ask a Lawyer and click View my questions.
- 2Your question history lists all submissions with the question text, submission date, practice area, and status (Pending / Answered).
- 3Click any question to open the full thread including the attorney response and any follow-up messages.
Questions remaining
Your My Services dashboard always shows how many questions you have remaining this month. Questions reset on your billing renewal date — unused questions do not carry over to the next month. The Unlimited plan has no cap.
Frequently asked questions
What if I run out of questions before my renewal date?
You can upgrade to a higher plan at any time from the Billing section. The cost difference is prorated for the remaining billing period.
Can attorneys represent me based on a Q&A response?
No. Q&A responses are general legal information only. If you need representation or formal legal advice, use Find a Lawyer to connect with an attorney for a consultation.
What if I am not satisfied with an answer?
Each question includes one follow-up clarification at no cost. If you are still not satisfied, contact support and we will review the response with the attorney.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Go to Billing in the sidebar and click Cancel on your Q&A subscription. Your access continues until the end of the current billing period.
